Flint, Michigan – February 26, 2026 – Flint Community Schools invites families and community members to experience the wonder and excitement of reading at the A Taste of Literacy event. This free, family-friendly event will take place on Wednesday, March 4, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Flint Farmers’ Market. The event also serves as a festive kickoff to March is Reading Month, encouraging students and families to celebrate reading all month long.

This annual event brings together scholars, families, educators, and community partners to promote literacy and provide families with engaging tools and strategies to support reading at home. This year’s theme, The Magic of Literacy, highlights the transformative power of books and storytelling to spark imagination, build knowledge, and open doors to opportunity.

“Our goal is to empower families with the tools and confidence they need to support their child’s literacy journey,” said Kevelin Jones, Superintendent of Flint Community Schools. “A Taste of Literacy celebrates the joy of reading while strengthening the partnership between our schools, families, and community. When scholars discover the magic of literacy, they gain skills that will benefit them for a lifetime.”

The event will feature a variety of exciting spotlight activities designed to engage learners of all ages, including:

  • A live performance by Jeff the Magician, bringing literacy and imagination together through magic

  • Make-and-Take storytelling activities with Shani Womack, Master Storyteller

  • Interactive literacy and learning games led by educators and community partners

  • Complimentary Market Bucks for the first 500 attendees

  • Raffles, free books, character appearances, and fun for the entire family

“A Taste of Literacy is about creating joyful, meaningful experiences that connect families with literacy in memorable ways,” said DeLynn Smith, Curriculum Development Specialist (Humanities). “Through storytelling, hands-on activities, and community engagement, we hope to inspire students and families to see themselves as lifelong readers and learners.”

Families attending the event will leave with valuable literacy resources, practical strategies, and renewed excitement for reading, making A Taste of Literacy a powerful way to launch March is Reading Month.

Flint Community Schools extends its appreciation to our key partnerships, including the Crim Fitness Foundation, Flint Public Library, and Flint & Genesee Education & Talent, for their continued support in making this event a success.
